GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)
—The Phoenix Coyotes are back home, at least its home for now, looking to climb back from a two-game deficit in their first-round playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings.

Speculation of the Coyotes’ imminent departure from Arizona is nothing new to the players, who have been dealing with the issue for more than two years now while the NHL has tried to find an owner who would keep the team in the desert, where the temperature approached triple digits over the weekend.

Series Breakdown

Not exactly hockey weather, but fewer than a thousand tickets remained for Monday night’s Game 3 of the best-of-seven series. Tradition, such as it is for this franchise, dictates all will wear the proper shirts for a “white-out.”

The Coyotes brushed aside the issue of their future beyond this series. Instead, they’re focused on trying to slow the Red Wings, specifically Pavel Datsyuk, who has two goals and three assists in two games. One of the goals and all three assists came in Detroit’s 4-3 Game 2 win on Saturday.

“He’s an all-world player, that’s for sure,” Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. “We’ve tried a few different matchups against him that haven’t worked very well and we’ll keep trying until we find a solution.”

Coyotes captain Shane Doan said Datsyuk has “been incredible.”

“You tip your hat to him, the things he does and the way he plays,” Doan said. “You admire him and you cant give him any free opportunities. He’s so good at creating opportunities you have to make sure you don’t give him free ones and you do your best to limit that.”

The Coyotes held a team meeting at Jobing.com Arena on Sunday, with a handful of players taking part in an optional skate afterward. The Red Wings, meanwhile, skated briefly at a Scottsdale arena.

Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg made the trip but is not expected to play because of a sprained left knee.

“We played two good home games,” he said. “The last one got really close.”

The Red Wings led 4-0 before having to hold on to win.

“They had a few power plays and a five-on-three and all of a sudden you’re right back in the game,” Zetterberg said. “It happens quickly in hockey and you’ve just got to respond and I think we did.”

Shortly before the series began, reports surfaced an unnamed source as saying the decision had been made to move the Coyotes to Winnipeg after this season. NHL officials quickly denied the reports, but with the potential sale of the team to Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer stalled by the threat of a lawsuit from a conservative watchdog group, the Coyotes’ future in Arizona is murky, at best.

The Coyotes found the timing of the Winnipeg reports curious.

“It’s almost a chuckle to start with,” Tippett said. “It is what it is. I think (for) our group it’s become part of the ongoing dilemma around our team that after a while you don’t even listen to it anymore. But I found it interesting that four hours before Game 1 everywhere you look there’s a thing that we’re going to Winnipeg.”

Tippett said he has enough to do to try to get his team ready to play the Red Wings rather than deal with such ongoing distractions.

The Coyotes’ Adrian Aucoin called the timing of the Winnipeg reports “kind of a joke, to be honest.”

“I thought it was kind of rude whoever threw it out there at that time,” he said, “but there’s always people looking to stir up some stuff. It’s nothing new to us. Every time we hear it it’s a couple of more weeks here, a couple of more weeks there.”

An interesting subplot is the hit Doan put on Detroit’s Johan Franzen that sent the bloodied Red Wings player to the locker room for repairs early in Game 2. Franzen said afterward that Doan should have been tossed from the game “no question about it.”

“He hit me from behind and they missed it somehow,” Franzen said. “He (the referee) could have picked charging, boarding, whatever pretty much.”

Doan laughed it off. Franzen simply lost his balance as the two went to try to be the first to hit the other, the Coyotes captain said.

“I mean, there’s absolutely nothing to it,” Doan said.

The Coyotes tried to take some comfort in the fact they almost came back from a 4-0 deficit with a big third period on Saturday. They also had a strong first period in Game 1. In between, it’s been all Detroit.

“It comes down to that desperation and controlling y our energy and making sure it’s kind of going in the right direction,” Doan said. “We’ve proven that we can do it. We just haven’t put the right combination together and they have. They’ve got a great team but realistically we win the next game at home on our ice and it’s a whole new series again.”

If not, the Red Wings will lead 3-0 and talk will surely center on whether Game 4 will be the last for the Coyotes in Arizona.

BRANDON, Fla. (AP)
—Steven Stamkos sat in the locker room at the Tampa Bay Lightning’s suburban practice facility, talking about everything from attending a baseball game on his day off to what it might take to end a puzzling scoring slump that’s extended into the playoffs.

Series Breakdown

The 21-year-old All-Star was second in the NHL with 45 goals during the regular season. But he has just five in his past 30 games and was not much of a factor while only getting off two shots in the first two games of his team’s opening round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Lightning insist they aren’t concerned. Despite Stamkos’ struggles, the Eastern Conference matchup is tied at a game apiece heading into Game 3 Monday night.

“You know you’re going to go through these things. Everybody goes through them,” Stamkos, who had 40 goals in his first 54 games, said of a scoring funk that’s lingered since February.

The first overall pick in the 2008 draft called Games 1 and 2 a learning experience that will benefit him as the first playoffs series of his progresses.

“It’s different. You can say all you want and watch as many playoff games as I did over the past couple of years—until you play in one, you don’t realize how intense it is, how hard you have to compete,” said the third-year pro, who shared the Rocket Richard trophy for the league’s top goal scorer with the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby last season.

“Everyone’s coming to take your head off out there,” Stamkos continued, “and you’ve still got to be able to be patient and make the play.”

Pittsburgh’s Brooks Orpik delivered a heavy and clean check on Stamkos early in the Penguins’ 3-0 victory at home last Wednesday. Tampa Bay rebounded to tie a franchise record for goals in a playoff game to even the best-of-seven series on Friday night.

Lightning coach Guy Boucher has encouraged his young star to focus on other aspects of the game, rather than worrying about scoring goals.

After all, with proven stars such as Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier on the ice, Tampa Bay has more than enough firepower to challenge the Penguins defensively.

“You look at the playoffs. … The team that wins the Cup is the best team. Everybody contributes, everybody does little things to make the team better,” Lecavalier, the Lightning captain, said. “It doesn’t mean that if you don’t score a goal the first two games that you’re not having a good series.”

Indeed, Stamkos doesn’t feel he played poorly in Pittsburgh. He said his confidence is building and that returning home for the next two games should help, too.

“You know it’s going to come,” he said of the prospect of scoring more goals. “But at this time of the year, as long as your team is winning, you’re happy.”

The Lightning had Saturday off after returning home from Pittsburgh. Several players, including Stamkos, spent of part of the day at a Tampa Bay Rays game as guests of Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau.

It was back to work Sunday with a practice session that lasted about an hour. Splitting the first two games on the road shifted home-ice advantage to Tampa Bay.

Boucher cautioned, however, that means little. Pittsburgh is 9-1 in Game 3 of playoff series since 2008.

“To me it’s not about home ice,” the first-year coach said. “We’re expecting them to make some adjustments. We’re making adjustments. That’s the nature of the game.”

The Penguins contributed to their own demise in Game 2, committing costly penalties that gave Tampa Bay six power play opportunities.

Lecavalier and St. Louis converted two of them, fueling the surge against goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said discipline will be important with the series moving to Tampa.

“We know that will be a factor for us going forward. … That’s the balance in a playoff series, being able to get teams into an uncomfortable position and getting them off their games by the way you play or getting under their skin or with your power play or other factors,” Bylsma said.

“The composure and focus we showed in Game 1 was not there in Game 2, and it caused not only to give them power plays but also for us to get off playing our game for large portions of that game. It’s something we have to be better at. That happens in every playoff series. The successful teams that win … understand that, and they stayed composed and don’t let things rattle them.”

BROSSARD, Quebec (AP)—By his standards, Jacques Martin’s latest new conference amounted to a stand-up comedy bit.

The Montreal Canadiens’ low-key coach held court at the team’s suburban practice facility Sunday, feeling sufficiently at ease to reveal his usually well-hidden sense of humor.

Series Breakdown

After all, the Canadiens returned from Boston with a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series after beating the Bruins twice at the TD Garden.

Was he thinking of sequestering his team, say in a hotel?

“Are you guys staying in a hotel?” said Martin, punctuating his playful exchange with a wink.

Asked about defenseman James Wisniewski’s fight with Boston’s Shane Hnidy, Martin said he liked what he saw before adding, “that’s not to say that we’re going to come out and try to play that game against them because we know what would be the result.”

Cue the howls of knowing laughter from those who recall Montreal’s 8-6 loss in Boston during the regular season, which saw the Canadiens beaten as much on the scoresheet as on the scorecard of virtually every bout in the fight-filled debacle.

OK, Jerry Seinfeld’s throne is not in danger. But, as Martin is wont to say, “it’s a process.”

In fact he is very fond of expressions like that one and words such as “system”, which he resorts to ad nauseaum, with no flair added to enliven the proceedings. Never one to be mistaken for the feisty likes of the Rangers’ John Tortorella or Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson, Martin has his Canadiens all-in with his playoff system, though.

“Right now he’s been pushing the right buttons and getting the right guys going,” rookie right wing Ryan White said. “Even the guys that come up throughout the year, they know what’s expected from them. It’s a system that you can play and something that you just need to buy into.”

It allowed Montreal to pull off stunning seven-game upsets over Washington and Pittsburgh last spring. The unexpected playoff run got the Canadiens to the Eastern Conference final, where they lost to Philadelphia in five.

Now, that same approach has Montreal off to a surprising 2-0 start following Saturday night’s 3-1 win in Boston, with the next two games at the Bell Centre.

Brian Gionta found himself right at home in Martin’s system after winning a Stanley Cup with New Jersey.

“It’s pretty similar,” said the Canadiens’ captain, who scored both of Montreal’s goals in Thursday night’s 2-0 series-opening win. “The Devils’ system got a bad rap for sitting back but it’s just making sure you’re responsible for that third guy. You don’t lose him, you don’t lose pinching (defenseman). You try to limit the turnover and the odd-man rushes.”

What’s going on in Boston right now is no laughing matter, what with the Red Sox off to their worst start since World War II.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Bruins have now lost six straight playoff games, including four in a row in their second-round loss to the Flyers last year after getting out to a 3-0 series lead.

“I mean it was tough the last few games,” left wing Milan Lucic said before the team traveled to Montreal. “Obviously they’ve been playing real well defensively and clogging up their defensive zone and the neutral zone. They’re making things really hard for us.”

With his tenure as Boston’s head coach likely hanging in the balance with the outcome of this series, Claude Julien has been feeling the heat as he deals with the sudden absence of team captain Zdeno Chara.

“When you’re down in the series like that and you’ve got to climb back up it definitely is a challenge of characters and will, desire, commitment, and everything else that goes with it,” Julien said. “We’ve got to roll up our sleeves here and go back to work. And we’re going back to work in another rink that hasn’t always been good to us. But we plan on making it a successful one.”

Chara took the pregame skate Saturday night after he was hospitalized overnight because of dehydration, but he did not dress for the game. Julien, who said Chara was sweating and dizzy after the warmup, confirmed that his All-Star defenseman would travel to Montreal but had no update on his condition.

“That’s basically all I’m going to say about that,” Julien said.

Monday night’s game will be the first between the teams in Montreal since Chara’s devastating hit on Max Pacioretty. The Canadiens’ left wing suffered a severe concussion and a broken neck vertebra in Montreal’s 4-1 win on Mar. 8 after the 6-foot-9, 255-pound Slovakian defenseman slammed him headfirst into a stanchion supporting a glass panel at the end of the visiting team’s bench.

Chara was given a major penalty and a game misconduct, but no supplementary discipline was assessed by the league. The outcry in Montreal led to an ongoing police investigation, though Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he has been assured that Chara will not be questioned during the playoffs.

Martin had no news on Andrei Kostitsyn, who also did not play Saturday night. Kostitsyn was struck on the foot by a Chara slap shot early in Thursday night’s game and returned to finish the game.

As for dealing with any potential lineup changes Julien might envision for Monday night’s crucial third game, such as replacing All-Star goalie Tim Thomas with Tuukka Rask or inserting 19-year-old Tyler Seguin, Martin played it straight all the way.

“I think we’re playing a team that’s a tremendous hockey club that got over 100 points so I think that there are areas of our game that we need to be better and that’s our focus,” Martin said. “I can’t do anything about what Boston is going to do. Sure, you prepare in your mind different scenarios but the focus is really on our team.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)—Boosh or Bob? Philadelphia Flyers coach Peter Laviolette called it a fair question after practice Sunday.

That doesn’t mean he was willing to say which goalie—Brian Boucher or Sergei Bobrovsky—will start Game 3 of their first-round playoff series at Buffalo on Monday night.

Series Breakdown

“We don’t talk about lineups,” Laviolette said.

Boucher worked himself back into the conversation Saturday night by stopping 20 of 21 shots in a 5-4 victory that evened the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series at 1. He did that in relief of Bobrovsky, yanked after allowing three goals on seven shots 12:30 into the first period.

And just like that, two games into the playoffs, the second-seeded Flyers are suddenly confronted with a goaltending quandary they had hoped was finally behind them after Bobrovsky claimed the No. 1 role following a solid rookie season.

The questions are nothing new for Boucher. He has become accustomed to goaltending carousels in his two stints in Philadelphia split over five seasons.

After going 11-7 in helping the Flyers reach the conference finals as a rookie in 2000, Boucher appeared in only three playoff games over his next two seasons before being traded to Phoenix in June 2002.

“You just prepare every day the same regardless of last night,” he said. “This is how we do it and it’s nothing new. It’s not an issue. You come to the rink preparing to play, and if you don’t, you don’t.”

Boucher provided a stabilizing presence during a frantic first period. He stepped in with the Flyers trailing 3-2 and in jeopardy of falling into an 0-2 series hole following a 1-0 loss in Game 1 on Thursday night.

In Buffalo, the Sabres paid little attention to which goalie they will be facing.

“It doesn’t really matter to us,” forward Mike Grier said. “We’re going to have to still get traffic and find a way to get the puck by the guy who ever’s in there.”

Then again, the Sabres have more pressing concerns of their own to address. It starts with a rash of undisciplined play that has led to the Flyers’ 15-9 edge in power-play chances.

Though the Sabres’ penalty-killing unit has bailed them out in allowing just one goal, the penalties have cost Buffalo by keeping the team’s star offensive players off the ice.

After scoring twice in the first period, Thomas Vanek was limited to five shifts and 4:18 of ice time during a second period that featured a parade of six Sabres players sent to the penalty box.

“I think from time to time, we let our emotions probably get too high and get the better of us,” Grier said. “We’ve got to be emotionally high, but be able to still be in control and not take so many penalties.”

The Sabres have shown new resolve this postseason, after they were knocked for being pushed around by the Bruins in being eliminated from the first round of last year’s playoffs.

On Saturday, the Sabres stood toe-to-toe—or chin to chest as in the case of diminutive Buffalo forward Nathan Gerbe exchanging shoves with Claude Giroux — to the bigger, more physical Flyers.

Coach Lindy Ruff was careful to stress he wanted his team to play with more discipline but not at the expense of losing its edge.

“I thought we answered the bell yesterday, and maybe went a little too far,” Ruff said. “We want to play with a lot of energy, but the right type of energy.”

The Sabres should get an emotional boost playing at home, where they closed the season going 9-1-2, including a playoff-clinching 4-3 overtime win over Philadelphia on April 8. Buffalo also has not lost consecutive games since a three-game skid from Feb. 16-20.

The Flyers, by comparison, went 9-9-5 over their final 25 games, and haven’t won consecutive games since March 8-10.

Bobrovsky is now 0-3-2 and allowed 18 goals in his past six games. Boucher is a little better, having gone 2-2-2 and allowed 12 goals in his past six.

“I talked to Bob last night. Obviously, he’s disappointed from a personal standpoint, but happy that the team was able to win,” Boucher said. “He’s a resilient person. Every time he’s been faced with adversity, he’s bounced back.”

NOTES: Bobrovsky was one of a handful of Flyers players to skate in an optional practice before the team traveled to Buffalo. … The Sabres had 12 players skate Sunday, plus LW Jochen Hecht (upper body), who worked out on the ice on his own before practice. … The Flyers’ power play has gone 6 of 56 in its past 16 games, including the playoffs.

Texas Rangers right-hander Alexi Ogando has been superb in his transition from reliever to starter. He may need another excellent performance to remain undefeated Sunday night.

To win his third consecutive start, Ogando might have to outduel former AL Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia in the finale of a three-game series against a New York Yankees team which may be missing Alex Rodriguez.

After being called up from the minors last June, Ogando was 4-1 with a 1.30 ERA in 44 relief appearances for the AL champion Rangers. He's been even better this year in the first two starts of his career, yielding no runs and two hits in each.

Ogando (2-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched at least six innings in both starts but might have lasted longer if it weren't for a blister on his right index finger. Fluid build-up under a callus on that finger kept him from pitching past the seventh inning during Monday's 2-1 win in Detroit.

Texas manager Ron Washington told the team's official website the blister had "dried up."

"No problems," he added. "He's good to go."

Ogando outdueled Detroit ace Justin Verlander on Monday and now looks to outpitch another 2010 All-Star as he faces Sabathia (0-1, 1.45), who has allowed four runs in 18 2/3 innings.

The left-hander gave up one run over 5 2/3 innings last Sunday despite allowing 14 hitters to reach base in a 4-0 defeat in Boston.

"You've just got to keep making pitches," Sabathia told the Yankees' official website. "I'm just out there still trying to make pitches and get ground balls and get outs. My arm felt good. It's just my delivery is a little off."

Sabathia started both New York wins over Texas in last year's AL championship series, including a six-inning performance in a 7-2 victory in Game 5.

Ogando gave up a run in the eighth inning of that game after throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his five previous appearances against New York.

Sabathia is 9-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 16 starts versus the Rangers (10-4), including the playoffs. He's 19-3 with a 2.41 ERA in his last 29 outings in the Bronx, where the Yankees have won seven of 10.

Sabathia, though, might not have help from Rodriguez. After hitting .563 in his previous five contests, the Yankees third baseman left in the seventh inning Saturday with lower back and oblique stiffness. However, no medical tests were planned.

"His lower right side was stiff," manager Joe Girardi said. "We'll see how he is tomorrow."

New York (8-5) didn't need his help as Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano homered in a 5-2 victory, just its third in 11 games versus Texas including the postseason.

Rangers veteran Michael Young, batting .418 during a 14-game hit streak in the Bronx, is 15 for 44 (.341) with five doubles against Sabathia -- 3 for 6 in the ALCS.
